04 Jan Kyle’s Bible Journal Jan 1-6
As I was reading through our bible reading plan this week I was intrigued by this passage from Genesis 3:6.
“When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it.”
It reveals the 3 ways in which all people are tempted. We are all tempted by something in our Body, Soul, or Spirit. Eve saw that the fruit was Good for food (body), pleasing to the eye (soul) and desirable for wisdom (spirit). Each of these are good things but if God has said no or not yet then it doesn’t matter how GOOD they are, they are wrong.
I try and put myself in her shoes (metaphorically of course, she was naked at the time) and see if I can understand her thoughts and perhaps keep myself from falling for temptation or at least understand why.
“When the woman saw that the fruit was good for food.”
How have I done something like that? An example might be “I see that this job pays well (is good for getting food) but I have to compromise a standard of mine in some way.” I started my young adult life attempting to become an actor. Along the way I began to see how to “make it” most people had to contribute their time to projects that were, let’s just say, less than godly. I made my own compromises along the way but eventually realized I wasn’t willing to give up my soul to gain that world.
“When the woman saw that the fruit (was)… pleasing to the eye.”
An example in my own life could be every girl that I was interested in until I met my wife. Thankfully I never acted on that desire with anyone before my wife, but like Jesus said “Anyone who even looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” I can safely say that I didn’t keep that standard as a young man, and I thank God for His mercy that covers over every sin.
“When the woman saw that the fruit (was)… desirable for gaining wisdom”
Two words. The NEWS. This is a continuous wrestling match. I desire to stay informed and be “wise” but this “wisdom” comes at a price, usually of my peace. How do I let my desire for wisdom drive me to make decisions that steal the very things that God purchased for me through the blood of Jesus: peace, love, hope, joy etc.
Ultimately I find comfort and correction in this passage. I am comforted that God knew all of this before He created people, and the Lamb was slain from the foundation of the world. The correction I receive is an encouragement to ask myself “Am I being deceived by the desires of my body, soul and/or spirit?”
I pray that your time in the word has been fruitful and that as we continue together in this discipline of reading the word that the love we have for God and for each other will grow ever deeper.
May the Lord bless you and keep you,
Kyle
