2 Corinthians 9:10-11 Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness. You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God.
God uses the different seasons of blessing or need that we each are in to generate thankfulness. Earlier in 2 Corinthians 8:3 Paul says that our desire is equality so that when one is in need the other supplies and vice versa. It’s not necessarily that God is looking for stasis or equilibrium but that He uses both the good and the difficult times to create an atmosphere and opportunity for thankfulness both for the giver and the receiver.
When framed in this light our “good” times should be used to look for opportunities to help those who are in their “bad” times, and to lose sight of that and just enjoy our good times is selfishness.
“This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs of the Lord’s people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God.”
Not that we shouldn’t enjoy the goodness of God in our good times but rather that there is a reason God entrusts us with more and it’s not just to enrich ourselves, think rivers not lakes.
God show us opportunities where we can give so that thankfulness will overflow in our community and in our world.
