Nehemiah 3:1-32 Then Eliashib the high priest rose up with his brethren the priests and built the Sheep Gate; they consecrated it and hung its doors. They built as far as the Tower of the Hundred…
The entirety of chapter 3 of Nehemiah is a listing off of different groups who worked on their one section of wall that surrounded Jerusalem. Each was responsible for their section, usually located in front of their house and going until the next persons area.
Not one of them could have completed the job alone. In fact the job probably seemed impossible when you took it as a whole. But when each of them did their part they were able to build in 52 days what they thought would take years.
I see two principles at play in these verses. First that we each have a part to work on in building the kingdom of God here, it may seem small but whatever part we have it is necessary to complete the work. The second principle I see is that the work we have to do is going to be in our own area of influence or dwelling. Unless you are clearly called to go to the nations like Paul then God has called you to be salt and light in your neighborhood and with your family and friends. When we start living this out our world HAS to change. It might not seem like the WHOLE world is changing but little by little the leaven is spreading, the light is being passed on, the seed is being sown. We have the privilege of co-laboring with Christ in building His kingdom on earth.
What am I called to be working on in my small part? Let’s ask Him that in our prayers and then act on it in our day to day lives and let’s see the world around us changed.
